Javier Regueiro – about me
Javier Regueiro (1965-2020) was a plant medicine Maestro and author, born in the Swiss-Italian town of Lugano to Spanish parents. Growing up, he quickly showed a marked talent for languages and a passion for traveling and deeply experiencing other cultures. He lived in Kyoto, Japan as a language teacher, graduated from the Swedish Institute of Massage Therapy in New York City where he was also very involved in the underground club and arts scene of the 1990s. Moving to San Francisco he trained in Rebirthing breathwork therapy at the Body Electric School.
During this time Javier maintained his passion for creating transcendent community experiences by continuing to DJ club and festival events in San Francisco and Europe. Javier experienced his first Ayahuasca ceremony in 2000 in the mountains overlooking Los Angeles. Everything changed from that evening, and a new life and direction began to unfold.
He moved to Peru in 2004 to study Amazonian plant medicine and shamanism full time, working with several indigenous and mestizo ayahuasqueros in the Iquitos and Pucallpa areas. In 2005 Javier became a student of Don Francisco Montes Shuña, a plant medicine Maestro and Perfumero of Capanahua descent. After rigorous training and with his teacher’s blessing, he became a full-time ayahuasquero.
Javier decided to settle in Pisac, Peru, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, which was very reminiscent of the Swiss Italian Alps that he grew up in. There he created the Ayaruna Center and provided plant medicine ceremonies, retreats, and plant diets for groups and individuals for the next fourteen years. During that time he returned to his beloved teacher, Don Francisco, every year for personal healing and to diet a new plant teacher. Javier committed his life to making Ayahuasca and San Pedro available to all people who felt called to engage with these medicines for personal healing and spiritual growth. It’s this commitment that inspired him to share what he learned in his books and podcast.
His outstanding books: Ayahuasca: Soul Medicine of the Amazon Jungle” and “San Pedro/Huachuma: Opening The Pathways Of The Heart,” “The Toé / Datura Diaries: A Shamanic Apprenticeship In The Heart Of The Amazon Jungle” and, “A Gift of Love: Poems, Prayers, and Stories from the Long and Dusty Road” published by Lifestyle Entrepreneurs Press available worldwide via Amazon in print, Kindle, and Audible formats.

Javier holds special significance as one of the few open and well-known LGBTQIA+ gender fluid medicine practitioners. Javier served as an inspiration and as a role model in a space that continues to be dominated by heteronormativity and masculine energy whether in the industrialized western world or in the indigenous traditions of Central and South America. Javier was not afraid to speak openly about his embrace of divine feminine energy and often used examples from his own life of finding balance between the masculine and the feminine and how this informed his work in the medicine space. He continues to be an inspiration to a new generation of LGBTQIA+ trainees and practitioners who are claiming their right to work with sacred medicines and to create ceremony and ritual that speaks to their unique experiences.
Sadly, Javier transitioned into the spirit world in Cuzco, Peru on October 16th, 2020 with little notice due to a kidney infection that went sepsis. If it weren’t for COVID, it’s more than likely that Javier would have received the medical treatment he needed in a timely manner and would still be with us today. He is deeply missed by his family and his many, many friends from around this world. His students, family, and friends are deeply grateful for the impact he had on our lives and the depth and breadth of the teachings he left behind. – The Javier Regueiro Legacy Council, 2021
